The scope of practice for a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) includes diagnosing and treating mental health and substance use disorders. Common conditions PMHNPs diagnose include ADHD and Autism. The role of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners also involves providing psychotherapy to individuals with mental health issues like depression and anxiety. They are responsible for prescribing psychotropic medications to manage and treat these conditions.
In addition, they are trained to promote well-being through prevention and education, helping patients develop strategies to manage their mental health long-term.
Take note that certain states like Alaska, Massachusetts, and Washington grant PMHNPs full practice authority, allowing them to work independently, while others require supervision by a psychiatrist.
